How to Adjust Your Water Heater to Save Energy

What you’re saying is power  comes in at the top here goes through  all that red reset button that’s EC oh  and we’re gonna talk about that a moment  yeah goes through the EC oh and then we  power the upper part of the tank  this this element gets its power and  it’s going to run until the upper part  of the tank is satisfied this thermostat  has to be satisfied it comes up to  temperature then we transfer power down  to the lower part of the tank and I’ll  go ahead and take this cover off as well  yeah a lot of people think because the  water heater has two elements both of  them work at the same time right and  that’s not how they work when the tanks  cold the upper thermostat and the upper  element come on first okay and then once  it satisfies an upper third of the tank  that transfers to the bottom which heats  the lower two-thirds now when the tank  heats up and it’s satisfied for  temperature if we used to draw a hot  water like say we’re gonna take a shower  wash our hands or something cold water  enters through the bottom of the tank if  it’s top connect it comes in through and  goes down to the dip tube okay on this  heater side connect so it come in to the  bottom Inlet down here which is going to  cool the bottom part of the tank which  is going to cause the lower element the  lower thermostat to come on when it  calls for heat and that’s what we’re  talking about the lower part does most  of the work and that’s why.

We put that  inkle away element in there so it’s  going to do most of the work if it’s  sized properly like Kenny said it’s it’s  the top part  rarely ever comes on now I mean you know  in some situations and this is out of  our control if you get somebody like an  apartment if somebody moves in and  they’ve got they bring in more people  than what they said and you got a lot of  people there or it’s over the holidays  or something like that  you can be using more hot water and  that’s whenever you get those calls  saying I don’t have enough hot water and  things like that because it’s undersized  it’s not being able to keep up with the  demand  I’m normally correctly in sized water  heater will be run from the bottom  element running all the time really I  mean that’s what’s doing all your  heating is the lower heating up like I  said earlier it’s the workhorse so it’s  the one that works the most and so it  usually typically four parts gonna fell  it’s gonna be the parts that worked the  most and so you know eventually that the  that’s why we’re like you said we’re  going to put the strongest element in  there the best lasting element in the  bottom because we know on a correct  installation it’s going to come on in  all the most again if you have questions  about anything we’re covering here today  go ahead and put that in the chat  feature which is on the right-hand side  of your screen just go ahead and type  that in and after we get done we’ll go  ahead and answers as many as we can  so all right so that’s how this works  every time we draw in hot water.

It’s excuse me draw and draw hot water  out of the tab we’re putting cold water  into the bottom of the tank right and  the lower heating element and and  thermostat heating element is energized  first heats up the the lower part of the  tag two-thirds of the tank and then  until it’s satisfied and if if it’s  totally cold then our upper heating  elements gonna kick on first  yeah sailing a new installation or when  the tanks completely code the upper  element the upper thermostat are gonna  kick on first that’s well in a new  installation say you just performed a  changed out change the water heater it’s  important to get all the air out of the  tank before you ever turn on power it  has to be completely full of water  before you turn on Powell exactly and  that’s one of the things you don’t want  to dry fire that upper heating element  so you know a good tip is to go ahead  don’t even  connect your power connect all your  water lines you know once you’ve got it  all installed before you connect power  go ahead and run all the faucet hot  water faucets and make sure that they’re  running free no spitting and sputtering  for at least three minutes so we get all  the air out of the tank then apply power  and then turn on the water heater so  that’s the the easiest way to do that so  you don’t dry fire and up or heating  element okay.

So that’s how the water  heater works now let’s talk about  troubleshooting because most of the time  the calls that they get is usually no  hot water at all you know they don’t  have any hot water and you know because  nobody calls and says my water heater is  working perfectly everything’s great  they always call saying I’m cold and  it’s not working yeah the only call then  there’s a problem they never call and  tell you how great some no all right so  no hot water it could be a couple of  different things first thing all you  should usually check is to make sure  that the tank is cold right easiest way  to do that I have this nice brass relief  valve usually it could be on the top or  it could be on the side but you’re  always gonna have a relief valve I just  simply touch it okay if the relief  valves hot but the complaint is no hot  water then you have another issue that  doesn’t involve the water heaters  usually going to be something in the  plumbing or something going on like that  we know the water heaters working if  that’s hot yeah we know the tank is full  of hot water and something else is  causing something nothing but cold water  to come out yes so you’re gonna want to  have to check a lot of other things I  mean but it you’ll know that the water  heaters working properly  correct okay let’s let’s say that that  we walk up to it and it’s cold what are  my steps alright if I come up to the  water heater and this is cold the first  thing.

I do is go to the breaker and turn  the breaker off okay right and once the  breakers off only come to the water  heater remove this upper access panel  okay now when you remove it it’s gonna  have the thermostat protector that you  saw but you’ll see that red button or EC  oh that’s the first thing I’m going to  check this red button like says energy  cutoff for EC oh it’s a safety device  that cuts power to the elements if the  water becomes too hot okay and if that  ever happens you’ll still have power to  the heater the power won’t reach the  elements okay so I’ll have power to the  here but it will not be going past this  easy oh yeah well not go crazy oh yes  but that means to water become too hot  usually more than 170 degrees and so  what we’re gonna do is press the button  if you press the button and it clicks  that means the water got too hot and  it’s caused by one of two things one  first thing would be either a grounded  or shorted element the second thing  would be a stuck thermostat so I’m going  to do a little bit of checking to see  what the problem okay so if you have to  press the reset button and it does click  that’s not the time just to go ahead and  button everything back up and move on  you do have a problem if you have to  press that reset button so and let’s  talk about that what’s the most common  issue whenever it does click the most  common issue of the reset button strips  usually going to be a grounded or  shorted element okay now that’s  something you are going to require  multimeter to check for okay and so and  I kind of give you an example of how to  do this let’s see.

I need a Phillips  screwdriver Jerry yeah right here  alright so using my multimeter I’m going  to turn this to the own setting which is  uh or continuity setting which is  usually shown by the kind of like a  Wi-Fi symbol or an upside-down horseshoe  and then let me click this around this  wire just to hold it for me can you hold  that up yep  alright so to check for a grounded or  shorted element powers off I remove the  two wires going to the element I’m gonna  just bend them out of the way and you  can hold that meter for me so I move the  wires out of the way my meter is set to  continuity meaning I’m going to have  usually an audible beep whenever I touch  the leads together and so what I’m going  to do is touch each screw on the element  to our ground now the tank is a good an  excellent ground because it is grounded  or you can use the thermostat bracket  which is kind of easy to see okay so I  literally just go from each screw to the  ground and my meter should not change  and my meter should not be panned you  you can see on this one it’s not  changing it’s not beeping  if it was to be or the meter was to  change that would mean that the element  is grounded and needs to be replaced  okay now you want to check both elements  when you do this I just did it to the  outer one but you get thigh that’s the  same thing remove the two wires from the  element each screw to the inner tank  which is ground and if it beeps or the  meter changes the elements grounded  that’s why it’s overheating and you  would need to replace that yeah and if  you’re gonna replace the element if you  come to that situation.

Home Improvements – Difference Between Satin & Semi-Gloss Paint

Hi I’m Tim Gipson and I’m going to talk  to you about the difference between a  satin paint and a semi-gloss paint  now a couple paint cans here and when we  talk about a satin paint or a semi-gloss  paint or a flat or eggshell or gloss  we’re really talking about the sheen or  on the paint so a gloss paint would have  a very glass like finish to it  such as you see on the on this where it  really reflects the light and when it  dries again it has a very glass like  finish to it and all the way down to a  flat paint which is has no Sheen so  other words when you shine a light on it  it just it does not reflect the light  does not look like it has any reflection  to the surface whatsoever  now the satins and the semi glosses are  in between the flat and the gloss paints.

The statins are a good paint and we had  just a little bit of an over spray or  drips on this paint can here which is  this is a satin and then you can see  where we’ve got some drips on this this  actually is a semi-gloss here so when  you look at it there’s a very subtle  difference now the difference is that  you’re going to have the satin finishes  are going to be much better to use on  your wall surfaces because the more  Sheen that you have the more  imperfections are going to show so if  you have some some lines or some bumps  in your wall or some repairs that have  been made if you were to put a  semi-gloss or a gloss on that it would  really show a lot of the imperfections in the wall so by going with a satin  paint what it allows us to do is it  allows us to get a surface that is scrub.

Abul and washable and that’s really good  to have in areas such as your kitchen  where  you may have your wall subject to a lot  of grease from cooking and it’s also  good in your bathrooms where you have a  lot of moisture so the paint doesn’t  break down and also if you get some  overspray on it’s very easy to wash it  so the satin is a very good wall finish  which is gives you a finish that’s  actually something you can maintain now  when you get up into the semi-gloss if  you don’t have very good wall surfaces  you may not want to consider using that  semi-gloss and so the semi glosses are  usually really good and limit those to  your trim areas where you want to get  that a little more of an accent I’m Tim  Gipson and that’s some information on  the difference between a satin paint and  a semi-gloss paint.
